Climate action and litigation in and beyond the courts - How Aurora sued the Swedish state

Around the world climate organisations, activists and youth movements are taking states and companies to court to demand action and accountability on climate change. In Sweden, the Aurora organisation is now suing the state for insufficient climate action.

Welcome to a panel debate on climate litigation in Sweden and globally. By discussing the Swedish Aurora-case with its protagonists, and drawing from recent research at Lund University, we will deepen the understanding of climate litigation from both the perspective of the courtroom and of the streets. 

Discussion questions:

  • What are the aims and arguments of climate litigation cases?
  • How can success be assessed within and beyond the courts?
  • What is the relation between litigation and social mobilisations?
  • How can litigation influence climate politics?

Speakers include sustainability researchers, lawyers, and representatives from the Aurora organisation. Aurora is a youth-led organisation which aims to pressure the Swedish state to act more forcefully to tackle the effects of climate change through climate litigation.
