A permanently employed senior lecturer may be promoted to professor if there is an operational need and if the person has the qualifications for employment as a professor. A request to be promoted to professor can only be made by the head of department or equivalent. It is not possible for an individual employee to apply. The request must be based on a well-identified need.
Previously, applications for promotion from senior lecturer to professor were processed by a small review group within the Academic Appointments Board, which then made a recommendation to the dean as to whether or not the application should proceed to peer review. It was also possible for the department to submit an application for promotion at any time during the year.
This process has now changed somewhat and is more similar to the process for readership/docent applications. An annual application round will be introduced with a deadline of 15 February and applications will hereafter be reviewed by the entire Academic Appointments Board. The Board may request clarification regarding both the documentation for the activities and the candidate's application. The Academic Appointments Board will recommend to the dean which applications will proceed to peer review. The applications that go to peer review are handled when the statements are received, so there is no overall review in the continued process.
