A new centre for social sciences - Cesam

Imagine a new building in the heart of the Paradis area, with library, study spaces, a stage, a café, classrooms etcetera. That is the plan for our new Centre for Social Sciences, Cesam.

With this new building the faculty wishes to gather together its departments that are situated in Lund, create a common space for the faculty and create modern premises for the library.

In March 2022, a preliminary archaeological survey of the proposed site for our new Centre for Social Sciences was carried out.

The  faculty has expressed its wish to stay in the Paradis area, and based on our requirements when it comes to facilities for teaching, research, staff and students, we have been able to determine what additional space is needed for us to be able to function effectively here on Campus Paradis. The extension we are planning will give us the space and functionality that we need.

The proposal for an extension submitted to the Lund Muncipality, which involves a request for amendment to the zoning plan, involves the addition of a new structure to M Building and O Building on the existing parking lot. Together, these buildings will be known as the Centre for Social Sciences (in Swedish, Centrum för samhällsvetenskap, Cesam).

The new zoning plan has not taken legal effect because it was appealed to Mark- och miljödomstolen ("The Land and Environment Court") in autumn 2022. The appeal has not yet been heard by the court.

Operations in the building

According to the current layout sketches, the following operations will be located in the new building:

  • The Social Sciences Faculty Library
  • Study environments, different kinds of study spaces
  • Spaces for the student union
  • A stage and and atrium
  • Classrooms
  • Café
  • Reception and other services

According to the plan, the Department of Human Geography and LUCSUS will move to Cesam. They will be located in the buildings M and O.
