The renewal of Gamla kirurgen enters a new phase

The renovation project for Gamla kirurgen is entering the fourth stage of the construction process as architects produce a more detailed design. If all goes according to plan, the fifth renovation in the building's history will begin in 2026.

Two years ago, the project to establish a social science centre paused, awaiting the Land and Environment Courts' consideration of an appeal against Lund Municipality's zoning plan for the Paradis block. Meanwhile, the Faculty of Social Sciences proceeded with the sub-project to renovate Gamla Kirurgen.

During the winter of 2023/2024, an architectural sketch was made for the building, which will house classrooms and study environments, psychotherapy clinics, labs, and office workplaces and staff environments for one or more departments.

In November, Lund University and the landlord, Akademiska hus, agreed to proceed with the renovation project. At this stage, architects and other consultants are drawing detailed plans of how the premises will change. The start of construction and the evacuation of the activities currently using the premises is tentatively scheduled for 2026.

"A guiding idea for campus development at the Faculty of Social Sciences is to make the best use of our buildings," says Robert Holmberg, project manager for the Faculty of Social Sciences' campus development project. "The renovation of Gamla kirurgen is a good example of how a 19th-century building can be prepared for the education and research of the future. Now we're up and running and that feels great."

Since its construction in 1868, Gamla kirurgen has been rebuilt four times: the first time in 1905 and most recently in 1999.
