Compiling and monitoring research

The Social Sciences Faculty Library can help researchers or heads of department to compile various reports or visualisations of publications or other research outputs.

Evaluation of research output

Evaluation of publications is often carried out by using bibliometric, citation-based, analyses. This type of quantitative analysis may be useful in some contexts, but in others it is too limited and needs to be combined with other types of synthesis. It is important to bear in mind that social science disciplines have different characteristics and publishing traditions, and that bibliometric analyses are often best suited to those publishing English-language articles in international scientific journals.

The Social Sciences Faculty Library can help with simple bibliometric overviews and advise on what kind of analysis might be useful for you. The University Library employs experts in bibliometrics who can help you with larger analyses and visualisations.

Overviews of research output

The library is happy to help with overviews of your own research output if you are a researcher, or your organisation's research output if you are a head of department. For example, it is possible to produce reports that can:

  • show how different publications, researchers or research teams have been cited by others (using Scopus/SciVal)
  • show how your organisation interacts with actors both inside and outside academia (using Scopus/SciVal and LUCRIS)
  • showcase your organisation's accumulated research output over a specific period (using LUCRIS)

Contact the faculty librarians to discuss what you are interested in looking at more closely and how to go about it.
