Description of the task

According to Lund University’s Rules of Procedure the dean is the head of faculty, represents the faculty within and outside the University and is expected to promote and develop the faculty’s activities from an overall perspective based on the vision and strategy of LU and the faculty. The dean is to strive to ensure research and education within the faculty are of high quality and promote collaboration with wider society. 

The dean is responsible for the faculty’s ongoing activities and is to make sure that they are performed in accordance with current legislation, regulations, collective agreements and other agreements, and thereby ensure the proper exercise of public authority and the faculty’s responsibilities as an employer. 

The dean is to be a member of the Vice-Chancellor’s Management Council and the line manager for the heads of departments, library manager and head of faculty office. 

The dean is chair of the Faculty Board and also has decision-making powers, delegated by the Faculty Board.
The deputy dean is the dean’s deputy and vice chair of the Faculty Board. 

Qualifications

The dean/deputy dean are to be teaching staff members with research expertise.

The dean/deputy dean are expected to: 

  • be a good leader and to have documented credentials for good leadership
  • have the engagement and determination to carry out the remit of the dean 
  • have strong credibility in research and teaching 
  • have an understanding of the faculty’s activities and the different conditions that exist as well as the faculty’s and University’s breadth and also have the ability to drive development within its different activities
  • have good familiarity with the University’s and faculty’s organisation and finances
  •  have a good ability to promote the faculty’s aims and interests concerning development and funding of research, education and external engagement
  • have a good ability to work for and represent the faculty in national and international contexts as well as manage various external challenges regarding the faculty’s activities 
  • have a good ability to lead, develop and manage finances and staff in the faculty organisation
  •  have good communication skills and receptiveness
  • have a good ability to delegate work within the organisation
  • have a good ability to manage work regarding the work environment and equal opportunities 
  • have a good ability to engage, motivate and cooperate with staff and students 
  • value and safeguard collegial leadership  
  • have a high level of personal integrity.
