Graduation Ceremony

Faculty of Social Sciences

The Faculty's Annual Graduation Ceremony for master's students takes place in June each year. It's an event full of excitement, relief, happiness, anticipation and some sadness, as students join together in taking their last official steps at Lund University.

When and where

The Graduation Ceremony for the Faculty of Social Sciences will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, in the beautiful University Auditorium. The university auditorium lies in the historic and beautiful main university building.

Guests

In Sweden, graduation ceremonies are traditionally perceived as intimate and private events, shared by the graduates and their most close loved ones. For this reason, in combination with the limited spots available in the auditorium, each graduate registered to the Graduation Ceremony is guaranteed one guest only. If space allows for it, there will be a separate sign-up form for graduates to bring a second guest. The Faculty of Social Sciences accommodates other loved ones to the graduates wanting to partake in the joyful occasion by providing a livestream of the ceremony.

More information later

More specific information regarding time, how many guests a student can bring and the sign-up form to the Graduation Ceremony will be published on this webpage as this information because available later on in the spring. In the meantime, take a closer look at the Frequently asked questions (FAQ) below. The FAQ section will be updated when more information becomes available.

It is not possible to register for the ceremony after the deadline. In compliance with Swedish law and fire safety regulations, there is a strict maximum amount of people allowed in the event venue. We determine the student body, audience/guest, and staff size of each ceremony based on this legal maximum. As such, if you miss the deadline, you and your potential guest(s) will not be considered in the total number of people we estimate will be in the building during each ceremony.

The only case where it may be possible to join despite missing the deadline is in the case that a classmate of yours (who registered on time) can no longer attend. In such a case, you and your classmate can email the faculty at graduationceremony [at] sam [dot] lu [dot] se and we can see what is possible.

In the days after the registration closes (on 15 April), we will send out more information about the ceremony, including how many guests each graduating student can bring.

In compliance with Swedish law, fire safety regulations and and ventilation requirements, there is a strict maximum amount of people allowed in the event venue. We plan each ceremony based on the amount of students and staff who will be participating. We can then determine how many guests each student is allowed to bring in relation to the legal maximum of the building (which is set by the aforementioned maximums).

This event will be recorded and live-streamed. By participating, you are aware of the potential that you could be filmed, photographed, or recorded on behalf of Lund University during the ceremony. The event will be live-streamed on YouTube and remain published on YouTube. Each master programme cohort will also be photographed on stage, and the resulting image(s) can be published by the university thereafter for any amount of time.

If you intend on participating in the event but do not wish to have any images or recordings of you taken, there will be a designated photo-free zone where you can sit. In such a case, you will not be able to walk up on stage with your graduating class.

You can find information about the University's handling of personal data at the link below. If you want to know how your personal data is used, or you feel that we have used your personal data in a way that violates the agreement or current legislation, please contact Lund University’s data protection officer.

Personal data and data protection (GDPR) at Lund University

If you have complaints regarding Lund University’s processing of your personal data, you are always entitled to contact the relevant inspection authority, the Swedish Data Protection Authority.

If you do not complete your programme on time, whether because you are not able to submit your thesis on time or for another reason, you are still welcome to attend the ceremony - as long as you registered on time.

The dress code for the ceremony is semi-formal attire.

Your attendance or non-attendance in the Graduation Ceremony will in no way impact whether or not you graduate from your programme or from Lund University. There is no requirement to attend or participate, and graduating from your programme is only determined by whether or not you complete and fulfill the requirements of your degree as designated in its programme syllabus. The Graduation Ceremony is entirely optional.
