Graduation Ceremony
Faculty of Social Sciences
The Faculty's annual Graduation Ceremony for master's students takes place in June each year. It is an event full of excitement, relief, and happiness as students join together in taking their last official steps at Lund University.
When and where
The 2026 Graduation Ceremony for master's programme students at the Faculty of Social Sciences will be held on Thursday, June 11, in Stora Salen at AF-Borgen.
Guests
In Sweden, graduation ceremonies are traditionally perceived as intimate and private events, shared by the graduates and their most close loved ones. For this reason, in combination with the limited spots available in Stora Salen, each graduate registered to the Graduation Ceremony is guaranteed two guests only. Students interested in bringing a third guest must sign up for an additional guest seat. A link will be sent out to the sign-up form on May 7.Third guest sign-ups close on May 12, at 12:00 p.m. (noon).

It is not possible to register for the ceremony after the deadline. In compliance with Swedish law and fire safety regulations, there is a strict maximum amount of people allowed in the event venue. We determine the student body, audience/guest, and staff size of each ceremony based on this legal maximum. As such, if you miss the deadline, you and your potential guest(s) will not be considered in the total number of people we estimate will be in the building during each ceremony.
Please note that we do not allow students to switch places with each other. We also do not allow students to offer a registered additional guest spot to a classmate/other student who forgot to register to the Graduation Ceremony on time.
In compliance with Swedish law, fire safety regulations and and ventilation requirements, there is a strict maximum amount of people allowed in the event venue. We plan each ceremony based on the amount of students and staff who will be participating. We can then determine how many guests each student is allowed to bring in relation to the legal maximum of the building.
This event will not be formally video recorded or livestreamed but there will be photographs taken during the ceremony. Each master programme cohort will be photographed on stage, and the resulting image(s) can be published by the university thereafter for any amount of time.
If you intend on participating in the event but do not wish to have any images of you taken, there will be a designated photo-free zone where you can sit. In such a case, you may not be able to walk up on stage with your graduating class.
You can find information about the University's handling of personal data at the link below. If you want to know how your personal data is used, or you feel that we have used your personal data in a way that violates the agreement or current legislation, please contact Lund University’s data protection officer.
Personal data and data protection (GDPR) at Lund University
If you have complaints regarding Lund University’s processing of your personal data, you are always entitled to contact the relevant inspection authority, the Swedish Data Protection Authority.
If you are enrolled in your thesis course for the first time this spring 2026, you will be invited to attend the Graduation ceremony. You do not need to have submitted your thesis on-time or to have completed all of your programme courses by June 2026 in order to walk at the ceremony.
Please note that you must also sign up for the for the Graduation ceremony in order to attend!
The dress code for the ceremony is semi-formal attire.
Your attendance or non-attendance in the Graduation Ceremony will in no way impact whether or not you graduate from your programme and earn your degree from Lund University. There is no requirement to attend or participate, and graduating from your programme is only determined by whether or not you complete and fulfill the requirements of your degree as designated in its programme syllabus. The Graduation Ceremony is simply an optional celebratory event.
If you are interested in being a student speaker at the Graduation Ceremony, or if you want to nominate a fellow classmate to speak, you have to reach out to your programme director, study advisor, teacher, or other member of staff in your programme, and ask that they nominate you or your classmate. This nomination will then be sent to the team coordinating the Graduation Ceremony, who will decide on the student speaker based on the incoming nominations. We try to recognise different programmes each year to give equal opportunity for representation at our Faculty.
Children are allowed at the Graduation Ceremony, but they do count in the room capacity. Thus, children need to be accounted for in your guest allowance.
If you are bringing a stroller, staff can help direct you and/or your guest to the elevator to Stora Salen. Strollers may be placed in the foyer adjacent to the auditorium, provided that they are not blocking any exits.
Each Graduation Ceremony usually lasts a little more than an hour, which includes speeches, diploma hand-outs, and music.
Upon entering the building, staff can help direct you and/or your guest to the elevator to the Stora Salen. While in the auditorium, the wheelchair can be placed on one of the two sides, as long as the wheelchair does not block any of the fire ways. Wheelchairs may also be placed in the foyer adjacent to the auditorium. There will be staff on site who can help with this.
Please reach out to graduationceremony [at] sam [dot] lu [dot] se (graduationceremony[at]sam[dot]lu[dot]se) if you and/or your guest are using a wheelchair and will need support from staff on site.
If you successfully registered to the Graduation Ceremony but are no longer able to attend, you should contact graduationceremony [at] sam [dot] lu [dot] se (graduationceremony[at]sam[dot]lu[dot]se) as soon as possible, so that they can take note of this change to the line-up of the students.
Guest(s) should, like graduating students, arrive early to be seated in the auditorium before the ceremony begins. They will be able to enter the auditorium 30 minutes before the ceremony starts, at the earliest.
We do not need students to formally sign their guests up to attend the ceremony. Guests do not need to show any tickets or something else to enter AF-Borgen or Stora Salen. No tickets will be issued for the Graduation Ceremony this year.
No, unfortunately we will not have a place for students and guests to securely store any valuables during the ceremony. There will be no coat check or cloakroom since the event takes place during high summer.
The photos taken by the photographer during the Graduation Ceremony will be shared with the participating graduates via email. We estimate that the photos will be shared within 2-3 weeks after the Graduation Ceremony.
