Kerstin Hesselgren Inaugural Lecture

About the inaugural lecture
The demand for leadership is ubiquitous in world politics but the supply is generally disappointing, and nowhere is this more evident than in the field of climate politics. This lecture will provide a meditation on the unprecedented civilisational challenge of responding to climate change through the prism of leadership. What is leadership, what can it do, is it necessary to resolve collective action problems, and why is it in such short supply where it is most needed? The primary focus will be on states, particularly the problematic role of great powers, although attention is also given to smaller states and non-state actors who have succeeded in mobilising others (from the Marshall Islands to Greta Thunberg).
