CMES seminar: The New Middle East: Bloc Politics and Geoeconomics
Join us for a seminar with Fredrik Meiton, The Swedish Institute for Foreign Affairs (UI), this talk offers a tentative outline of a new governing logic in Middle East conflict, suggesting that it reveals something about the world order about to replace American unipolarity.
At a moment when the Middle East is more violent than in decades, the region appears to be splitting into two rival blocs. The Middle East is of course no stranger to bloc politics; it dominated much of the 1960s and 2010s. What is different this time is the apparent lack of ideology. Alliances as well as rivalries primarily turn on a transactional, economic logic. Alliances seem largely to congeal around shared economic and security interests at a moment when security and economics themselves overlap to an unprecedented degree. And geopolitical rivalries seem mostly born out of economic competition. Drawing on utopian trade corridor planning and Red Sea proxy wars, this talk offers a tentative outline of a new governing logic in Middle East conflict, suggesting that it reveals something about the world order about to replace American unipolarity.
Coffee, tea and pastries will be served after the seminar.
Everyone is warmly welcome!
