We are in the middle of the busiest time of the academic year – overwhelmed by thesis supervision and wrapping up all that needs to be done before the end of the semester. The end of May also marks a mile stone for doctoral students, honorary doctors and jubilee doctors when they are awarded their doctoral degrees at the annual doctoral degree conferment ceremony. This year nearly forty newly minted doctors from our faculty have been invited to the ceremony in the cathedral where they will receive their degree certificates. I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate you all on your fine work and extend a thank you to supervisors, examiners and departments for their role in building a world class research education.
In the week preceding the ceremony we have the honour and pleasure of welcoming two extraordinary scholars as honorary doctors to the Faculty: Brenda Yeoh and Frank Biermann. Their research in different ways speaks to the challenges of our times, engaged as it is with issues of global justice. Frank Biermann, professor of Global Sustainability Governance with the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University is engaged in developing a new theory of planetary politics revolving around “Political and legal research for a world that is more equal, less wasteful, more inclusive, and in balance with nature.” Brenda Yeoh, Distinguished Professor, Department of Geography, and Migration and Mobilities Cluster at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore (NUS) researches the politics of space in colonial and postcolonial cities and migration, both globally and with a focus on Asia in particular. I would like to encourage you to attend their seminar in Eden on May 27, which promises to be highly topical. The seminar is followed by a mingle providing an opportunity for informal interaction with the speakers.
I hope to see many of you there!
