Jurisprudence and Socio-Legal Studies
Intersecting Fields
5 March | 13:15 to 15:00
Room M331, 3rd floor, Allhelgona Kyrkogata 18 (House M), Lund and online
The book Jurisprudence and Socio-Legal Studies: Intersecting Fields presents a set of related studies aimed at showing key points of intersection and common interest between jurisprudence and socio-legal studies, which are otherwise typically considered distinct fields. It reflects and draws on the author’s work in these areas over more than four decades.
The first half of the book explores theoretical issues surrounding the enterprise of socio-legal research, its current scope, and its historical traditions. It compares juristic theory and socio-legal inquiry and profiles a selection of European jurists. Cotterrell frames these studies, explores the history of interactions between jurisprudence and socio-legal research, and shows points of convergence between these fields.
Roger Cotterrell is Anniversary Professor of Legal Theory at Queen Mary University of London. His academic qualifications are in law and sociology with specialisations in jurisprudence, sociology of law, comparative law and social theory. He is the author or editor of 14 books and more than 140 essays and articles in these fields. In 2013 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award of the Socio-Legal Studies Association and in 2014 was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. He has held visiting academic positions in Hong Kong, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, the United States and Spain and his publications have been translated into ten languages. A primary concern of much of his research has been to show how sociological perspectives can illuminate juristic scholarship and explore the significance of law as a focus of sociological inquiry.
