Master of Science (Two years) in Global Studies, 120 higher education credits

The Master of Science (Two years) in Global Studies is an interdisciplinary social science master's programme which aims to provide the student with knowledge of globalisation, conflict and social change. This involves an understanding of theories connected to processes of globalisation and transformation as analysed through various disciplinary frameworks. The programme presents major cultural, economic, political and socio-psychological theories and concepts to enable the student to make informed, comparative analyses of how globalisation is connected to conflict and social change.

The programme is a vital base for policy makers, trainers and practitioners who work on global issues in government agencies, private firms and NGOs. It also prepares students for postgraduate studies.

Programme Structure

The Master of Science (Two years) in Global Studies comprises a total of 120 credits (2 years).

The first semester begins with a profile course introducing the students to the main themes and issues of the programme. This is followed by courses in the theory of sciences adn research methods.

The second semester begins with another profile course directly related to the main theme of the programme. Through the profile course students further increase their understanding and knowledge of global development through a deeper comprehension of theories and current research.

This is followed, in the second half of the second semester, by courses in the theory of sciences and research methods.

The third semester consists of optional courses to be taken at Lund University or any other recognised university in Sweden or abroad. The courses are chosen after approval of the programme coordinator, and enable students to tailor the programme to suit their particular interests.

During the fourth and last semester students complete the programme with a written thesis, which provides the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of theories, methods and argumentation.

The courses are studied in the following order:

Globalisation, Conflict and Social Change , 15 credits (first half of the first semester)
Courses in the theory of sciences/research methods  , 15 credits (second half of the first semester)
Social Welfare in a Global Context , 15 credits (first half of the second semester)
Courses in the theory of sciences/research methods , 15 credits (second half of the second semester)
Optional course, 15 credits (first half of the third semester)
Optional course, 15 credits (second half of the third semester)
Master's Thesis in the student´s major social science discipline, 30 credits (the fourth semester)

Degree
After completing the Master of Science /(Two years) in Global Studies, the students will acquire a Degree of Master (Two Years) of Science in Global Studies, with a major in either of the following:

- Gender Studies
- Development Studies
- Human Geography
- Education
- Media and Communication
- Political Science
- Social Work
- Social Anthropology
- Sociology
- Sociology of Law

The major is depending on the major in your Bachelor's degree.

How to apply

The application session is open between December 1 and January 15 for programmes starting the nextcoming fall term. Swedish students may apply later, between March 15 and April 15.
