Hedersdoktor Meric Gertler håller föreläsning
Den 25 maj promoveras Meric Gertler till hedersdoktor vid samhällsvetenskapliga fakulteten.
Meric Gertler är professor och dekan vid University of Toronto och har lyckats med konststycket att ägna sig åt såväl administrativt universitetsarbete som att hålla sig kvar i forskningstoppen.
Han har bland annat utvecklat ekonomgeografisk forskning kring innovation, arbetsmarknader och institutioners betydelse för regional utveckling.
De senaste tio åren har Meric Gertler haft täta kontakter med Lunds universitet; som gästföreläsare, som deltagare i forskargrupp, som opponent vid disputation och som ledamot i styrelsen för CIRCLE, Lunds centrum för innovationsforskning.
Den 24 maj håller Gertler en föreläsning på Institutionen för kulturgeografi och ekonomisk geografi med titeln:
Resilient Design? The Evolutionary Dynamics of Innovation in Architecture
Architecture is a notoriously volatile industry. Employment in the sector is famously cyclical, closely following the vagaries of the business cycle. In longer-term perspective, it is also subject to major periodic upheavals, in which once-dominant styles of practice are overthrown by newly emerging sensibilities and architectural fashion. Given this distinctive lack of stability, this sector has much to tell us about evolutionary dynamics and resilience of cultural industries over time. Moreover, architectural firms design and produce built form, playing an essential role in the process of place making. In doing so, architecture has been strongly tied to particular places, which have spawned distinctive styles through the unique combination of local materials, histories, politics, economic conditions and cultures. This paper examines how cities and their social and economic characteristics underpin the success and resilience of this highly dynamic cultural industry over time, fostering the production and circulation of innovative practices locally, and providing various opportunities for mitigating risk both to architectural firms and workers.
